To be able to provide evidence for how a medicine transfers to breastmilk, we need to test milk from mothers who use medicines during the post-partum period. In case you missed our webinar on the ConcePTION European Breast Milk Collection in May this year, we are now sharing a recording of the presentations!
Data is missing because robust clinical lactation studies are rare, and the existing data cannot be confidently translated into evidence-based clinical practice. As a response, the ConcePTION project is developing a research infrastructure to collect, store and analyse samples of breast milk and blood. The webinar covers four parts of the effort to develop this infrastructure, including the first of five demonstration projects studying how different compounds transfer to breastmilk.
In the webinar Mats G. Hansson, Senior Professor at Uppsala University, gives an introduction to ConcePTION and its Work Package 4, which aims to build a standardised Europe-wide collection of breastmilk for research, followed by a presentation of the standardisation of biobanks by Andrea Wutte, Head of the BBMRI-ERIC QM Service. Professor Pawel Baranczewski at Uppsala University presents bioanalysis requirements for demonstration studies and lastly Professor Hedvig Nordeng shares the challenges and first results from a lactation demonstration study done at the University of Oslo including over 30 breastfeeding participants using levocetrizine.
